Cheer Du Jour

A little cheer to forget your troubles, and better yet, to toast with a glass of bubbles!

Aug 8 – National Dollar Day

on August 7, 2013

English: Flag shaped $ money. Obverse of Unite...

Happy Dollar Day! This is a new holiday to me, and I found some interesting pages while researching the origin of the day (which I haven’t confirmed yet). If you are interested in the history of the U.S. monetary system, there are great timelines on the US Mint’s website and the U.S. Treasury website.

Start the day with a stack of silver dollar pancakes (click here for Martha Stewart’s recipe). Then, feel like a millionaire by heading to your nearest dollar store and/or dollar-menu restaurant with a fist full of fresh dollar bills. Go crazy – buy a tiki mug (which you can later fill with a dollar soft drink from McDonalds), pick up a package of candy (which used to be penny candy and is now a bargain at $1), or get a bunch of helium balloons to brighten someone’s day.

A bit of nostalgia for those of us who grew up within Dispensa’s Kiddie Kingdom’s advertising range, which illustrates the changing value of the dollar. (Sadly, the Oakbrook Terrace amusement park closed decades ago). The park’s jingle changed through the years, gradually reducing the number of rides per dollar every few years. YouTube, the great vault of pop culture treasures, shows the dollar’s decline from 1979 (any ride a quarter, 6 for a dollar) to 1981 (any ride a quarter, 5 for a dollar):

Flash forward to 2013, where a recent county fair sold amusement ride tickets for $1 each (5 tickets for most rides!).
