Ah, simplicity, how it eludes me. The KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) method is encouraged at many corporations, and yet it remains elusive. Why is it that the more technology we have, the more complicated our lives become? Well, July 12th is the day to take control, to live your life in balance, to achieve simplicity. In Thoreau’s own words (see the Quotations Page, “Rather than love, than money, than faith, than fame, give me truth”. Now, here lies a possible obstacle – truth can cause all sorts of complications to simplicity. If all else fails, celebrate the day with a cocktail made of simple syrup – see about.com for some great recipes. I also suggest blasting a Simple Minds album today (if you don’t have an album -gasp- you can hear two of their most popular songs, Don’t You and Alive and Kicking on You Tube).

From the Do One Thing website, details of the day are:

Duane Elgin’s 1981 book, Voluntary Simplicity was a powerful catalyst for increasing awareness about the need for individuals and society to find sustainable ways to live. The book has been revised and is even more relevant today.

Voluntary simplicity is a not a new concept. In fact it speaks to ancient wisdom that our societies seem to have lost in modern times. Choosing to live a life of simplicity is not about choosing to live in poverty; it is about living in balance. Based on three key elements – ecological awareness, frugal consumption and personal growth, voluntary simplicity is helping people change their lives and collectively helping to create a better world.

July 12, the birth date of Henry David Thoreau, is the perfect opportunity to help raise awareness in your community about the benefits of simplicity.
